Letter to EPPS Community

April 12, 2013

Dear EPPS families,

You will find below a letter responding to community concerns regarding the childcare programs offered by the Military Family Resource Centre at Elizabeth Park Public School.

A hard copy of this letter will go home with every student on Monday April 15, 2013.

If you have any further questions, please contact Cheryl Bauman-Buffone at the school at 613-523-5406.

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I am writing in response to community concerns regarding the operation of the childcare programs Kids Klub (KK) and Kindergarten Klub (KGK).  These programs are operated by the Military Family Resource Centre of the National Capital Region, which has been an important community partner to our school. The program coordinator has communicated information to families about future changes to their program delivery.  As I understand the situation, the MFRC-NCR decisions are based on three factors:

  • the mandate of MFRC-NCR is to serve military families and currently 90% of the students enrolled are not from military families;
  • the planned implementation of full-day kindergarten at Elizabeth Park for September 2014 will impact the operation of the program; and
  • the lease for the school property is scheduled to end in 2017.

With respect to the mandate of the MFRC-NCR, that is an issue that is external to the school.  The program provider has the right to make decisions about the program delivery. Based on a letter recently sent to the parents/guardians of children accessing the MFRC-NRC programs, it appears that they intend to continue the operation of the school based program until June 2014.

I want to reassure you that ElizabethParkPublic School is scheduled to have a full-day kindergarten program operating effective September 2014.  As part of the implementation process, there will be consultation with the community about the need for an extended day (before and after school care) program.  This consultation will be an important discussion for our school community next year.  Extended day programs can be provided by either the school district or by a third party.  To learn more about the extended day programs currently being offered in the district, please use the following link on the district website: http://www.ocdsb.ca/programs/ExtendedDayProgram/Pages/default.aspx

I would also like to make you aware that the school district has recently received formal notice from the Department of National Defence regarding the lease for the land and building that currently house ElizabethParkPublic School.  The lease will not be extended past the summer of 2017. The district has made the Ministry of Education aware of this information and is working on plans regarding the future location of ElizabethParkPublic School.  In the very near future, we will be sharing more information with the community about how we can work together to consider the accommodation options available for our school. As many parents know, the district has identified the need for a new school as one of its capital planning priorities.

I understand that there is a lot of change happening and/or planned for our school.  I am confident that we can work together effectively to manage these changes and will continue to keep you updated.  I hope to have more information for our next school council meeting.  Please do not hesitate to speak with me directly if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Bauman-Buffone

Principal
